Birding was made from a series of photographs that I took of a nature program on the television. I manipulated and reassembled the photographs to reflect the artifacts of their digital origins. I then imported the images into the computer and manually scrolled through them, creating an illusion of a moving image. A video camera was used to record what occurred on the screen.
I am interested in exploring the influence of digital technology on the varying ways that I experience nature—with a sense of wonder, anxiety and unease. While I am bombarded by images of nature in commercials, television, nature and survival shows, and the internet, this proliferation creates the illusion of a boundless natural world.
